Unions

In 2017, union members accounted for 7.4 percent of wage and salary workers in Alabama, compared with 8.1 percent in 2016, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Regional Commissioner Janet S. Rankin noted that the state’s 2017 union membership rate was the series low since comparable state data became available in 1989; the state’s rate was at its peak in 1993 when it averaged 14.7 percent. Nationwide, union members accounted for 10.7 percent of employed wage and salary workers in 2017, unchanged from 2016.
