ADOL VETERANS COORDINATOR ATTENDS WHITE HOUSE VET CONFERENCE
MONTGOMERY – The Alabama Department of Labor State Veterans Coordinator Donal Cieutat was invited to attend the White House Veterans Affairs Conference with State and Local Leaders on November 29 in Washington, D.C. The event was held in the South Court Auditorium of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is part of the White House Complex. U.S. Vice President Mike Pence addressed the group about the importance of veterans affairs. Following his remarks, he posed for a photo with conference attendees. Cieutat commented “Being a vet myself, I was honored to be part of this important conversation about the challenges facing this country’s veterans. It was also incredibly valuable to collaborate with veteran leaders from around the country to share ideas and resources so we can better serve the veteran community.”
The event featured a series of discussions led by national experts on veterans affairs: Secretary David Shulkin and Deputy Secretary Thomas Bowman from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; Anthony Kurta, Senior Career Official, Office of the Under Secretary of Personnel and Readiness from the U.S. Department of Defense; Acting Secretary Eric Hargan from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and Secretary Alex Acosta from the U.S. Department of Labor.
Following the open-format discussions, there were breakout sessions to address: Veterans Employment and Transition Assistance; Veterans Homelessness; Addiction, Mental Health and Suicide Prevention; and VA Modernization and Reform.
Over 50 state and local leaders from across the nation attended. Alabama leaders included State Representative Barry Moore and Rear Admiral Clyde Marsh, USN (Ret.). Rep. Moore represents House District 91 and is the chair of the Military and Veterans Affairs Committee. Adm. Marsh is the State Commissioner and Director of the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs and serves on the Executive Committee of the Alabama Veterans Network.
